What a WinOLS license actually covers
Before comparing options, three rules decide almost everything:
- One license, one workstation. A WinOLS license is valid for a single workstation. If two people need to work in WinOLS at the same time, that is two licenses, not one shared login.
- Licenses are not transferable. Selling, renting or passing on a license (your customer number and password) is strictly forbidden. You are buying a seat tied to your account, not an asset you can move on later.

Software, premium features and checksum modules are separate. A WinOLS license gives you access to the core software and its main tools, including 2D and 3D map visualization, hex and decimal views, automatic processor recognition and map detection. New Premium Features are available separately on an annual basis, while the existing software can continue to be used without renewing them.
Checksum correction is handled separately through dedicated checksum modules, which are assigned a certain number of checksum points depending on the module required. In practice, however, a separate WinOLS checksum module is not always necessary, as many professional flashing tools can calculate and correct checksums automatically. The license options you can actually buy
WinOLS is not sold in “good, better, best” tiers. Instead there are a few clearly defined products, and which one applies depends on your situation:
- New user license. The starting point if you do not already run WinOLS. This is the full professional application for one workstation, and for most people setting up their first seat, this is the line item.
- Additional license. For adding a second, third or fourth workstation. Because one license equals one workstation, every extra person tuning in WinOLS at the same time needs their own additional license.
- Upgrade from WinOLS 4. If you are already on WinOLS 4, you move up to WinOLS 5 through an upgrade rather than buying new. Whether that upgrade is free or paid depends on when you first bought (see the next section).
- Annual subscription. A yearly subscription is required to keep the WinOLS software active and fully usable. This should not be confused with the update subscriptions commonly offered with tuning tools, where updates mainly provide support for newly released vehicles, ECUs or protocols.

Match the license to your business
You are starting out (no WinOLS yet)
Buy a single new user license for your one workstation. That is the whole decision at this stage. You are a growing shop with more than one tuner
Start from the number of people who need to be in WinOLS at the same time, and buy that many seats: one new user license plus an additional license for each extra workstation. The common mistake is trying to run two tuners off one seat to save money, then losing far more in bottlenecked turnaround than the second license ever cost. Size the seats to your real workflow, not your minimum.
You already run WinOLS 4
WinOLS 4 is being phased out, so upgrading to WinOLS 5 is becoming a necessity rather than simply a choice. Once support for WinOLS 4 ends, you will no longer be able to continue working with the software as before.
Your upgrade path depends on when you purchased your WinOLS 4 license:
- Bought WinOLS 4 after 01-04-2020: your upgrade to WinOLS 5 is free, per seat.

If new ECUs are your bread and butter, the annual update pack is not optional, it is the point. Skipping it to save a yearly fee means the exact cars your customers bring in this year are the ones your software cannot see. For a busy shop, keeping updates live pays for itself in the first job it unblocks.
A license is not full coverage on its own
One thing tuners underestimate: buying the WinOLS license is step one, not the finish line. Two things sit alongside it.
- Checksum coverage. WinOLS corrects checksums, but coverage for specific ECUs comes through checksum points and upgrades. If you regularly touch ECUs outside the mainstream, factor this in from the start.
